On this page
Choices Lab is a hardware led brand, and this page is mostly about hardware. If you are buying a cartridge rather than a sealed disposable, the fittings and the coil decide your experience as much as the oil does, and almost nobody explains them.
What 510 thread actually means
510 is a thread standard, not a brand or a quality mark. The name comes from the original specification: ten threads over five millimetres. It became the default connection between cartridges and batteries across the whole industry.
The practical benefit is interchangeability. A 510 cartridge fits a 510 battery regardless of who made either, which means you are not locked into one company’s ecosystem the way you are with proprietary pod systems.
The practical catch is that a shared thread guarantees the parts screw together, not that they are well matched. Fit is not the same as suitability, which is what the battery section below is about.
Ceramic coils, and why the material matters
Choices Lab specifies a full ceramic heating element, and that specification is worth understanding rather than nodding at.
Older cartridges used a wick, usually cotton or fibre, drawing oil to a wire coil. It works, it is cheap, and it has two weaknesses: the wick itself contributes a taste as it ages, and it burns if it runs dry, which produces the scorched flavour that ruins the rest of a tank.
A full ceramic element replaces that with a porous ceramic body that both holds and heats the oil. It is more tolerant of running low, it contributes no flavour of its own, and it generally heats more evenly. It costs more to produce, which is why it is worth stating in a specification.
The phrase to watch is “full ceramic” against “ceramic”. Some hardware uses a ceramic element around a conventional wick and is described loosely. If the distinction matters to you, ask.
The two in one format
Choices Lab also produces a two in one cartridge, holding two separate oils in one body with a switch between them.
The appeal is obvious: two profiles without carrying two devices. The trade off is less obvious. Two chambers in a fixed body means each is smaller than a single chamber would be, so you are exchanging capacity for variety.
It suits someone who genuinely alternates. If you reach for the same profile every time, a single larger chamber is better value and simpler.
Choosing a battery, which is where people go wrong
This is the part that actually causes disappointment, and it is entirely avoidable.
A 510 battery supplies a voltage, and many are adjustable. Too high and you scorch the oil, producing a harsh, burnt taste and degrading flavour compounds. Too low and the cartridge underperforms and can seem faulty when it is fine.
Start low and step up. If a cartridge tastes harsh, reduce the voltage before concluding the cartridge is bad, because the most common cause of a bad cartridge is a badly set battery.
Do not overtighten either. Screwing a cartridge hard into a battery can damage the connection at the base. Finger tight and no further.
None of this applies to sealed disposables, which is their main advantage. If this section sounds like more thinking than you want to do, the disposables in our Cake and Puff LA listings remove all of it.
Reading the specification honestly
Listings for this brand commonly quote total cannabinoids above ninety percent, distillate or live resin fills, and freedom from additives, pesticides and heavy metals.
Those are the right things to claim. They are also claims, and the way to test one is to ask for the batch result behind it rather than to accept the brand statement. A specification describes what a product should be. A certificate describes what a particular batch was.
Our fake spotting guide covers the rest of the checks.
Questions people actually ask
What does 510 thread mean? An industry standard connection, ten threads over five millimetres. Any 510 cartridge fits any 510 battery.
Do I need to buy a battery separately? For a cartridge, yes. For a sealed disposable, no.
Why does my cartridge taste burnt? Most often the battery voltage is set too high. Reduce it before assuming the cartridge is faulty.
What is a two in one cart? Two separate oils in one body with a switch between them. You trade chamber capacity for variety.
