Kingpen is one of the few names in this category with a documented history rather than a logo invented last year. It is worth knowing that history before you buy, because it explains both why the brand is copied so heavily and what separates a real one from the fakes.
Where Kingpen came from
The brand launched in 2014 as 710 Kingpen, created by Greenwolf, and it was among the first high potency oil cartridges to reach the California market at a time when almost everything available was unregulated. It later became part of the Loudpack group, which handles cultivation and distribution, and the name shortened to Kingpen along the way.
That 2014 date matters more than it sounds. Most vape brands you encounter in the UK were created after the disposable boom, when the model was to design packaging first and source oil second. Kingpen predates that entirely. It was built around a cartridge at a point when the cartridge was the product, and the brand has carried Cannabis Cup recognition and a large licensed distribution footprint in California since.
The wider family includes Kingroll, kief coated pre rolls infused with the same oil, and Kingchew. Those are separate formats rather than variations of the pen, and you will occasionally see them referenced on listings that are actually selling something else entirely.
Live resin against distillate, which is the real distinction
The line that actually matters within the Kingpen range is Kingpen Royale, which is specified as one hundred percent live resin and zero percent distillate. Almost nothing else in this market makes that claim in those terms, and understanding why is the most useful thing on this page.
Distillate is stripped down to near pure THC and then has terpenes added back afterwards. It is consistent, cheap to produce at scale, and it is what sits inside the large majority of disposables sold anywhere. The flavour comes from what was reintroduced, not from the plant it started as.
Live resin is extracted from flower frozen fresh rather than dried and cured, which keeps far more of the original terpene profile intact. It costs more, it is less consistent batch to batch, and it tastes noticeably different. Whether that is worth paying for is genuinely a matter of preference. Some people find live resin heavier and prefer the cleaner edge of a good distillate. What you should not do is pay a live resin price for a distillate cart, which is a large part of what the counterfeit trade relies on.
What the counterfeits get wrong
Kingpen has a specific counterfeit problem rather than a general one. Unofficial manufacturers, concentrated in China, produce empty hardware carrying 710 Kingpen branding and logos, which is then filled by whoever buys it and sold on as the real thing. The packaging can be extremely convincing because it is produced on the same kind of equipment as legitimate packaging.
This changes what you should check. Print quality and box condition are weak tests here, because the fakes get those right. What they cannot replicate is the supply chain. A genuine Kingpen product reaches you through a documented route with batch information that resolves to something real. If a seller cannot answer where a unit came from, the packaging tells you nothing.
Two practical signals do still help. Prices well under the market rate for live resin are a strong tell, because live resin genuinely costs more to make and nobody discounts it to distillate prices out of kindness. And a listing that mixes up the product lines, describing a pen using Kingroll or Kingchew language, is usually assembled from scraped copy rather than written by someone holding the product.
Our fuller checklist is in the guide on how to spot fake THC vapes, which covers the checks that apply across every brand we stock.
How it sits against the rest of the shop
Kingpen is a cartridge lineage first. If you want the closest comparison in stock, look at brands built on extraction quality rather than device novelty, such as Whole Melt Extracts, which competes on the same ground.
If your priority is a sealed all in one with nothing to assemble, the disposables are a different proposition and better suited. If your priority is the character of the extract itself, this is the part of the catalogue to look at. Neither is objectively better and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you the one they have in stock.
Getting a full tank out of it
Short draws of two to three seconds beat long hard pulls, which flood the coil and waste oil without delivering more. If you are new to this, take one draw and then leave it several minutes before deciding whether you want another, because the onset is slower than most people expect and the common mistake is stacking draws before the first has landed.
Store it upright and out of heat. Live resin in particular changes character when it has been sitting warm, and a car glovebox in summer will do more damage to the flavour than months of normal use.
To compare strength across products properly rather than by guesswork, our strength calculator works out total THC and milligrams per puff from the device size and percentage together, which is the only way to compare two products that quote different numbers.
Questions people actually ask
Is Kingpen the same as 710 Kingpen? Yes. The brand launched under the 710 Kingpen name in 2014 and shortened it later. Both refer to the same lineage.
What is Kingpen Royale? The live resin line, specified as one hundred percent live resin with no distillate. It is the part of the range where the brand’s reputation actually sits.
Why is it copied so much? Because the brand is old enough and well known enough to be worth copying, and because empty branded hardware is manufactured and sold openly. The counterfeit problem is about the supply chain rather than the packaging.
Is live resin stronger than distillate? Not necessarily, and often the opposite. Distillate usually tests higher for THC. Live resin tastes fuller because it keeps more of the original terpenes. Strength and flavour are separate questions.
